High-resolution Modelling of Clouds and Gravity Waves: Scale Analysis, Numerics and Validation
A proposal in the framework of the Pakt-Initiative of the Leibniz-Association within the Priority program „TextRisikoreiche Vorhaben“
Resume
Clouds as well as gravity waves, which both are investigated with high-resolution models, imply challenging scientific questions. At the same time, research regarding numerical methods in fluid mechanics show remarkable improvements, especially with regard to the time integration of multiple coupled processes and with regard to the correct treatment of the frequently observed singular limit regimes of geophysical fluid dynamics. The aim of this project is to take advantage of the expertise of the three participating institutes to provide a joint model, which is up to date with the state of the art in numerics, and which addresses the questions mentioned above. The model will then be used to investigate the dynamics of clouds and breaking gravity waves.
